I have written reviews about The Golden Nugget before but we just returned from Las Vegas and we experienced a side of The Golden Nugget that most people probably never see. First, let me say that The Golden Nugget is still the class of downtown. The rooms are very nice, clean, all the restaurants are great, and their pool and associated water features are wonderful. I have only 2 small issues with The Golden Nugget. The first is that if you stay in the wrong tower such as the Carson Tower, you have to spend 15 minutes walking from your room to anywhere. The other problem I have which is not an issue with many people, is that it seems to ALWAYS be crowded. The crowds are a bit too much for me. There were times I couldn't even find a place to eat. But I suppose that comes with such a nice place. We checked in on a Saturday night to stay 3 days. We went straight to bed at 11 pm and two hours later my wife awoke with terrible chest pains and pressure. This of course, changed our entire trip. I called downstairs and she was rushed to the hospital. From the time I called, I was amazed how well their security and medical people responded. There was a security guy in our room in 1 minute. 2 minutes later their CMTs were there. 2 minutes after that the ambulance came and rushed her to Valley Hospital. Her heart rate was very high so they had to shock her heart to get it back down. That was quite harrowing at the time but in retrospect and after being informed about her condition, I realize it wasn't all that unusual. She stayed in the hospital for 4 days while they did every imaginable heart test to determine if there was blockage or damage. In the end, it was the least scary result. Atrial fibrillation. No damage, no heart attack, she may need medication to control it. This was great news. And the people at Golden Nugget were so nice. Although we had a car, they insisted I go with her in the ambulance and they would send a car to pick me up. Through the next 3 days as I came and went, the security people always wanted to know how she was doing. I was so impressed so as you can imagine, I have nothing but good things to say about The Golden Nugget.

If you're going to stay in downtown Las Vegas and you want the best place, Golden Nugget is still the one. The rooms are always very nice and clean. And although a bit crowded, the casino is just my size! I love a casino I can see across. If I can walk in one side and see the other side, I'm in heaven! They have a decent poker room, nice rooms, good service, and they're in the heart of downtown. All their restaurants I've tried are very good. The buffet is great and we went to an Italian restaurant there where the waiters stopped for 3 minutes about every 45 minutes and sang. It was a blast.

The Golden Nugget is still pretty golden.

I visit the Nugget every time I go Downtown... Something you just have to do.

When I was last there, we went as we won Gordie Brown Tickets. I had heard nothing about him, but man, this guy is funny. Some of his impressions are bang-on, others are good, not great. High energy and the band is awesome.

The casino is nice, but it feels cramped; maybe the low ceiling, but hey, all places are like that on Fremont Street... Decent Video Poker at the bar, quick drinks, somewhat pleasant staff.

Buffet was not so great. Decent, but worthwhile with the 2-4-1 in the ACG...

We have been coming to the Golden Nugget for several years now and we love it each and every time. The rooms are so beautiful, the hotel is glam, the staff is always kind and helpful. It is our very favorite hotel downtown and we prefer to stay there than on the strip. I cannot begin to describe the food in all of their restaurants, so delicious! Thanks for making all our stays so great!

Ok, this is the best hotel downtown, but even with the shark tank and all of the glitter in the main areas, this is far from being the Venetian, or even the Mirage. The hotel itself has grown over time, so you are going to be walking down long halls, turning corners, then finding yourself in the original part of the hotel with smaller rooms, older bathrooms and an air conditioner that doesn't really work. And yet one floor down, and a bit over, you might be in the part built more recently with a larger room and a newer bathroom.

The casino is comparable to anything on the strip...the newest slots and busy table games. But if you really want this, you should probably stay on the strip. If I'm downtown, I want a smaller casino, more locals (and not tourists and frat boys) and a little bit of historic grit around the edges. If you find yourself in the middle of the casino floor at the Nugget, you could really be at any of a dozen strip hotels, which may or may not be a good thing.
