Iowa has three types of casinos: pari-mutuel (racetrack) casinos, riverboat casinos, and native American casinos. All Iowa casinos have a minimum gambling age of 21, but it is only 18 for pari-mutuel wagering or bingo. All casinos in Iowa are open 24 hours a day.

Many casinos in Iowa offer hotels for guests. Eleven of the 16 Iowa riverboat casinos have a hotel, while all of the racetrack casinos have hotels, and two Indian casinos have hotels.
