Mohegan Sun Casino
HotUser reviews
In Connecticut you have a choice of this place and Foxwoods. The poker room atmosphere is much better here. First, it is on the ground floor and bright and cheerful. There is no sense of playing in a basement here.
The dealers are organized and friendly. Getting a table change is generally very easy, so I have quit no limit tables with few players and joined 2-4 tables easily and with easy permission and no hassle from the brush.
Seats are comfortable. I find the entire casino more interesting and comfortable than Foxwoods. Foxwoods seems to me like a huge mall with poker in the dungeon. Mohegan seems like a bright and cheerfully decorated casino with poker just off the main floor.
They no longer offer 3-6 games. That used to be my favorite. They do have 4-8 as well as the 2-4 and no limit.
Left over from the days they had a 3-6 are $3 chips that can still be used in play. Rather an interesting collectors item as well.
Rooms are expensive. The poker rate after 6 hours of play is $99. The problem, of course, is that we can’t make a reservation ahead of time. I generally go to some place using room saver coupons, especially since I don’t need to pick up a current copy on the road, but can go on line and find them and print them. My favorite place to stay is a Microhotel just one mile away with a free shuttle during much of the evening hours. Even the cab rides are not that expensive from the casino to this motel, so a free ride over with the cab as backup if I stay into the morning, makes this a good place to stay. However, it is not cheap on weekends. Just to pay rack rate for a Mohegan Sun Room is just way above anything reasonable. Slot players get good deals. There are also daily bus that give great value with freeplay and free buffet.
I like the buffet. I have not had a great experience with other food places.
The original casino was worth seeing. It really did represent an Indian culture, built in a circle with entrances and even parking garages are named after nature and there is plenty of interesting art scattered about. The add ons have not been as true to those themes, but interesting also, exploring abstract art themes with glass and shape and color.
Poker Comps are $1 an hour for food, but if you play a long, long day, you might be able to go in to the lounge and have an absolutely free (different every day) meal on the Mohegan Sun. Just ask. 8-10 hours is suggested.
There are daily tournaments and Player’s Club points can be used to buy in to them.
Here, as in Foxwoods, I have managed to get in to see a show by standing outside the showroom and looking for players selling tickets.
I tried my luck at the craps table as a beginner and since I was the only one there I had 4 coaches to help me place my bets. Made 200 there which I later used to play extra time on the gaming tables. I'm not a good player but it was fun!
Reason I score some low is because you cannot place an "I don't know" score or n/a since I don't stay there for the hotel or players club.
Seemed to be a good selection of slots, but the way they deal with excess change (any amount over an exact multiple of the denomination of the game you're playing) is different from any other casino i've been to.
When i went from a penny machine to a quarter machine, the machine spit out a 14 cent voucher (the amount over an even number of quarters). I didn't look at the voucher and tried to put it back in a couple of times. It kept spitting it out, so i walked away. i got about 50 feet from the machine and realized that it was for 14 cents and not the $20.89 i had on my original voucher.
I immediately went back to the machine and my money was gone. Someone had cashed it out. I immediately got a security guard, who said it happens all the time. I went to security (i know they have cameras and can tell exactly who took my money), but they were no help.
i'm not a big gambler, i go mostly for the fun...so that probably figured into it. When i returned home, i wrote to the management with all the details (voucher #, etc.) and got NO reply.
You'd think, in the interest of customer satisfaction, that they'd at least send me a voucher or something. NOTHING! i won't be back. (the ratings that i've given a "3" to are because i couldn't submit this form without rating everything....there should be an "n/a" choice)

Although I am not a high roller, I used to get wonderful offers/comps - even a great deal on a room Fri. night (I needed a break after a week at work at a high school).
However, the offers have tightened up and, alas, the Fri. night rooms are way beyond what I can afford, so my once or twice a month escapes are no more.
Nonetheless, I still prefer Mohegan over Foxwoods - I can play longer (more bang for the buck) before I hit the bottom of my allowance. Staff members are great and friendly. Next to Vegas, this is my favorite place to be.
