Casinos have spent decades figuring out how to make money from gamblers. So if you’re going to gamble, shouldn’t you learn a few tricks of your own?
After more than 35 years of writing about casinos, visiting hundreds of them and studying the mathematics behind casino games, I’ve learned something important: There is no secret system that guarantees you’ll beat the casino. But there are perfectly legal casino “hacks” that can help you play smarter.
Some can lower the house advantage. Others can help you get more value from the money you’re already gambling. And occasionally, knowledgeable players can even identify unusual situations where the casino has added enough extra value to make a game far more attractive than it normally would be.
The surprising part is that you don’t need to be a professional gambler to use most of them. Here are five casino hacks I think every gambler should know.
Casino Hack #1: Find the Best Bet in the Casino — Not Just the Best Game
One of the biggest mistakes casino gamblers make is assuming that all casino games have roughly the same odds. They don’t.
The difference can be enormous. Even within the same game, one wager can be dramatically better than another.
For example, baccarat’s Banker bet generally has a house edge of just over 1%. The Tie bet at the exact same table can carry a much larger casino advantage of 14%.
At craps, some of the basic bets have relatively low house edges, while some of the flashy proposition bets in the middle of the table can be considerably more expensive over time.
Blackjack can be one of the better casino games—but only if you find favorable rules and play the hands correctly.
Video poker is another excellent example because two machines that look virtually identical can have different pay tables and therefore different theoretical returns.
So don’t just ask: “What game should I play?”
Ask: “What is the best version of that game, and what is the best wager I can make?”
That one change in thinking can potentially save a regular casino player a significant amount of money over time.
THE HACK: Know the house edge before you bet. When two bets provide similar entertainment, choose the one that gives more of your money back over the long run.
Casino Hack #2: Never Pay the Casino for Mistakes You Could Have Fixed at Home
Casinos make money from the mathematical advantage built into their games. But on some games, players give the casino an additional advantage by making mistakes.
Blackjack is a perfect example. There is a mathematically correct way to play every hand based on your cards and the dealer’s exposed card. That’s what blackjack basic strategy tells you. Ignore it, and the cost of your mistakes adds up.
Video poker works the same way. Whether you should keep a low pair, four cards to a flush, three cards to a royal flush or another combination isn’t a matter of intuition. The correct plays can be calculated mathematically.
Fortunately, you don’t have to calculate them yourself. Strategy charts and training programs can teach you the proper decisions before you ever enter a casino. Practice until the decisions become comfortable.
Why spend real money learning something you could have learned for free?
THE HACK: Practice blackjack and video poker strategy before gambling. Make your mistakes at home when there’s no money riding on the outcome.
Casino Hack #3: Make the Casino Give You Something Back
If you’re going to gamble anyway, don’t play anonymously. Join the casino’s players club and use your card.
Casinos want to know how much you gamble because your play determines how valuable you are to them as a customer. In exchange, you may receive benefits such as free play, complimentary rooms, meals, promotional offers, drawings and other rewards. Those benefits have value. But there’s a trap. Never start gambling for the comp.
Imagine you’ve planned to gamble $500 but continue playing because you’re trying to earn a free buffet, another tier level or some other reward. You lose another $200 chasing something worth $30. That wasn’t a free $30 benefit. You potentially paid $200 for it.
The smart approach is exactly the opposite. Decide how much you were going to gamble anyway, then collect every legitimate benefit associated with that play. Think of casino rewards as a rebate.
THE HACK: Use the players club every time you gamble, but never increase your gambling just to earn a reward.
Casino Hack #4: Decide How Much You Can Lose Before Going To The Casino
This might be the simplest casino hack on the list. It may also be the most valuable. Set your maximum loss before you start gambling.
Let’s say you’ve decided that you’re comfortable risking $300. That’s your session bankroll. If you lose $300, the session is over.
The reason for making the decision beforehand is simple: gamblers don’t always make their best financial decisions after losing money.
That’s when you start hearing thoughts such as:
“I can’t leave now. I’m down $300.”
“I’ll just play another $100.”
“I only need one good hit.”
“I’ll increase my bet so I can get even faster.”
That’s how manageable losses can become much larger ones. The next spin of a slot machine doesn’t know that you’re losing. The roulette wheel doesn’t know you’re down $500. The cards don’t know that you need to get even before dinner. Your previous losses don’t make a future win more likely.
This is also why betting systems that tell you to continually increase your wagers after losses can become dangerous. They don’t eliminate the house advantage. They simply put increasingly large amounts of your bankroll at risk.
THE HACK: Decide the maximum you’re willing to lose while you’re thinking clearly—and don’t renegotiate with yourself after the gambling starts.
Casino Hack #5: Learn When the Casino Is Giving Away Extra Value
This is where casino gambling becomes especially interesting. The normal casino game has a built-in house advantage. But sometimes the casino adds something extra.
It might be:
* Free play
* Point multipliers
* Promotional bonuses
* Tournaments
* Drawings
* Valuable comps
* An unusually large progressive jackpot
Each of these can potentially add value to your gambling.
Suppose you’re playing a good video poker game and the casino runs a promotion that substantially increases the value of the points you’re earning. The game’s pay table hasn’t changed. But the total value of playing it has.
Progressive jackpots provide another example. As a progressive grows, the theoretical return of the game increases because the top prize has become larger. At some point, an unusually large progressive can attract knowledgeable players who understand exactly how much additional value that jackpot has added. Professional advantage players take this concept much further.
They don’t necessarily ask: “Can I beat this casino game?”
Instead, they ask: “Is there anything happening right now that changes the normal mathematics of this game?” That’s a much better question.
But don’t automatically assume that every casino promotion is valuable. “10X points!” sounds fantastic. But 10 times almost nothing can still be almost nothing. You need to understand what those points are actually worth and how much gambling is required to earn them.
THE HACK: Whenever a casino offers a promotion, translate it into dollars. Then compare the value you’re receiving with the money you’re putting at risk.
The Casino Already Knows the Math. You Should Too.
The best casino hacks aren’t secret systems. They aren’t ways to predict the next slot jackpot. They aren’t roulette patterns. And they aren’t betting systems that magically turn a negative-expectation game into a guaranteed winner.
The best casino hacks are based on knowledge.
1 – Know which bets have the lowest house advantage.
2 – Learn the proper strategy when your decisions affect the outcome.
3 – Get every legitimate benefit the casino offers for gambling you were already going to do.
4 – Control your bankroll instead of chasing your losses.
5 – Pay attention when promotions or progressive jackpots change the normal value of a game.
None of this means you’ll win every time you visit a casino. You won’t. Even the best bets can lose in the short term. But there’s a huge difference between gambling blindly and understanding exactly what you’re betting on.
I’ve spent more than 35 years studying casinos, and if there’s one lesson I wish more gamblers understood, it’s this:
The casino knows exactly how much every bet is worth. Before you put your money on the table, you should know too!

Great column. It’s really common sense. I think people think it’s all for fun and head into the casino blindly.
